The Impact of Position at Hold’em Poker

H.H.A.

Your Strategy at a table of Hold’em Poker should take in consideration the position you are playing. The position is one of the more important aspects of the game; it could affect the reactions of the others players and you should take advantage of this any time you can. The term is the reference

If your position is at the left of the dealer you are the small blind. The next seat to the left is the big blind, 2 positions left from the dealer. The next position, third left from the dealer, is called “under the gun”. Finally, the player at the right side of the dealer is the called “cut off”. No other positions have a specific name. The importance of the positions at the table in Hold’em is in reference to your turn to play in comparison to other players, specifically how early or late in the round of bets is your turn. That's why the dealer position (“on the button”) rotates between players, because this is the most favorable position of all, this player will act always at the end.

The early positions (small blind, big blind and under the gun) are difficult positions to play since you don't have information on the number of players and the possible strength of their hands at the beginning. It is recommended to play only good hands in this position, and to fold if necessary.

The players in the middle positions can play more loosely but with a little of precaution still, because there are some players left to act in the round of betting and this can create some surprises in the game. So play with confidence but cautious.

The late position at the table is the best; you already have all the information of how the other players decided to play their hands, and you can have an idea of how many players are really this far in the game. You have many options: bet, raise, fold or call. One good tip is, if nobody has made any bet, you can take an easy pot by being aggressive with your bet, but do this with precaution because somebody can call your bluff. So if you have good cards and a good position you have a really good combination; don't waste your opportunities. Also, if you don't have anything in your hand, and the betting round is a hard one, just escape and fold.
