Texas Hold'em Poker Introduction

By HHA

This is the most popular card game in recent years, but it is also one of the best games for a novice to learn because it is less complicated than other poker variants like Omaha High or 7 Card Stud, which involve a lot more odds. The best way to learn the game is to play it often.

A Texas Hold'em game follows these steps:

Posting the Blinds

A regular game usually begins when at least 2 players place a determined amount of money on the table, called the “blind”

Pocket Cards

Each player will receive 2 cards face down; these 2 cards are called “pocket cards”.

Pre-flop

This is a round of betting which starts with the player at the left of the “big blind”. This bet should at least equal the big blind amount. You have the usual poker game options available: check, fold, call and raise. After this round ends the dealer eliminates the first card of the deck, called a “burn card”.

Next, 3 cards are dealt on the table face up by the dealer; this is called the “Flop”, and the 3 cards are communal, meaning every player can use them in combination with their pocket hands. This is followed by another round of betting. Every betting round begins at the left of the dealer button.

The Turn

Another card is burned, and the next communal card dealt is called “Turn” followed by yet another round of bets.

The River

One last card is burned and the final card, called “River” is dealt face up. The players can combine any of their pocket hands with the 5 communal cards to make a 5 card hand, and the last betting round is the last step. The remaining players at the table reveal their hands, beginning with the player to the left of the last player to make a call.

The player with the best hand wins the pot. In some rare cases, the pot is split when 2 players get a tie.
